Wells

Dear Emily,

Ooh, I love Emily Wells!  She has everything that I want in my ears.  She also has side projects, like Pillowfight- and Used to Think is your song for today!  Now, we don't really have this feature at the Dodo, the Shop for Today, but if we did, I'd send you here- Emily Wells will sign any music you buy from her!

at last

Dear Readers,

At long last, I have found who I want to be; whom I would be, if I had a photographic memory, command of several languages, a huge library of read books, and a really big brain:  Helen DeWitt.  Oh, yes, you will want to be her, too!

I am going to be studying her hard.  What does she wear, what does she do, and, of course, I will read all her books and writings.  Because I Am a Fan.  Which reminds me of Carrie Brownstein's book, which you should read in between Helen DeWitt titles.  You should also take a minute and see what you think of Olivia Rodrigo.  (Because, if, you know, godforbid, I should fail at being Helen DeWitt, and I stumble at being Carrie Brownstein too, well, hotdamn, I still have Olivia to try for!).

Until next time, I will be continuing to consider How to Become What I Want to Be.

PS

Massive thanks to dear friend M, for giving me Some Trick sometime ago!

Another Dance Party Friday!

Dear Feet,

It's been a while, but here is something to inspire your dancing.  Let's inspect The Jerk  (contemporary) a little closer.  You will want a tune, or two.  Or, maybe you want this.  Anyway, take it all, or take none of it; the world is crammed with things you can watch, think, see, and do!

PS

One more.

Fun; con't.

Phyliss Madonna's Cheese Pie.

Dear Fun-Loving,

How is your summer of fun progressing?  Does it feel like a habit now, to have your twice weekly dose of fun?  Is it too little?  Too much?  Can you tell the difference?  I think too much would be if you need to stay in bed all day the day after the fun, and too little is when you want to stay in bed all day the day of the appointed fun.  Alles klar?

Here are some suggested funs for week four of summer fun!

Build a tiny home.

Bake a (cold set) pie.

Dance music, and again.

Turn some resin.

Draw a pastel still life.  Part two.  Part three.

See you next Tuesday, for more fun!

Cello Sweets.

Dear Secret Aspiration,

I have your cello song of the day right here.  I hope you enjoy it.

One day, one day I will get myself a cello, and I will make these kind of singing sounds myself.  Yes, it will be a kind of anti-climax, because I have none of the skills or patience necessary to play 'good,' but I know I can play bad, and I am sure that it will be fulfilling to play the cello, no matter how bad.  Why, you wonder?  Take a look at that embrace.  Look at that relationship, that huge hollow breathing space, which can only be filled by hands on the neck and the bow.  Why would one resist such an intimacy?

And no, I do not want lessons, I want cellos.  One for you and one for me.  A cello in every hall closet.  And I will not play it, but I will make sound, and there is no music without sound.

Transmutation!

Dear Artists,

Oh how I love a good transmutation!  Here is a very fine one; sent to me by a dear co-worker, who combs through all the other interesting blogs and sends me the best of it, which I send then to you!  It has your song of the day in it, so be sure you push the red and white play arrow.

Falling Apart

Dear Avant Garde,

Researchers here at the Dodo have found this interesting music for you; made by time and chance, you are going to love it, just as you love the peeling paint, the streaking rust, and the eroding cliffs.

Read about it here, and listen to it here.  Or, reverse the order if you are adventurous!

Discerning Listeners.

Dear Listener of Discernment,

Oh I expect you are even now listening to Agnes Obel, but in the very small chance that you are not, let's have a little series of her music.  Understand me now, I adore this music.  My ears have been waiting, preparing for this sound for years.  It sounds like my favorite choral, avant garde, folk, alternative, local, and contemporary classical, all in one sweet and beautiful package.  Enjoy this now, and stay tuned for more later....

Limited Time Offer.

Dear Tuned In,

Good golly Miss Molly, my dj was burning down the house yesterday evening!  She played an awesome set of songs all from 1978.  Hear it, but hear it fast, because it's only available until next Tuesday.

It's in the water.

Dear Searchers,

This week you will find your song in the water, right here.  I love particularly that as a player of the lagoon, you must stand waist deep in your instrument.  It's a very lovely and poetic notion.

Take another dip in, if you like.

Another Delight.

Dear Little Darlings,

Please come over and play bicycles with me!  You won't need your helmet, and I have scads of drum sticks, so hurry over soon!

Lost Your Marbles?

It's ok, my dears, you can find them in this instrument....
